meet the makers

Welcome to the blog about our weekly cookie experiment. Each week Jason and Zoe alternate chef duties and give their best attempt to create the world’s best cookie. Neither of us is particularly skilled in the baking departement (Zoe=Physicist, Jason=Engineer), but we hope to get better as this experiment goes on.

How this all started

Zoe is a graduate student at UC Berkeley, where up until 2008, she was offered a daily mid-afternoon break that included Mother’s brand cookies. Sadly, Mother’s went out of business taking it’s discounted cookie deal with it. Without a steady supply of delicious cookies Zoe fell into a deep, impenetrable sadness, dragging Jason along with her. During a particularly boring Thursday, when the day seemed to be dragging on forever, Zoe and Jason stumbled onto a great idea. “We should make our own cookies!” At first it seemed just a crazy idea, like “Let’s fly to the moon!”, but the more they though about it the more it seemed to make sense. “If we can put aside the tiny detail that we are terrible at baking, this might actually work.”

Ever since then, we have been exploring the underground cult of cookieism and trying to unlock its many secrets. Search our posts if you too are seeking cookie-enlightenment.

If you want to try them the above website has the flodeboller recipe that makes Zoes’ mom crazy. Don’t waste your time with the bases, any bland wafer or even a graham cracker would do. I’ll be trying soem of your recipes.

If only you could ship flodeballer to the East Coast!! I just made the Pumpkin Muffin Tops with Butterscotch chips, and they turned out great. Very easy, and also, with Canola oil (I used Olive) pretty healthy. Now I’m really sold on parchment paper too, first time I used it.
